Yes, technology aids investigation, and we make good use of OSINT (Open Source Intellligence) and SOCINT (Social Intelligence) but those nuggets of gold require the input of a human being,  someone with the ability to interpret and deduce. 

A detailed check on a person can generate invaluable intelligence, and by analysing information and investigating relationships and connections, we often back-in to associations that are not obvious and spot discrepancies and inconsistences that tell a story.
